Life Insurance

Coverage for the people who depend on you

Life insurance is easier to think about when you start with the job you want it to do, rather than with the product names.

What life insurance may help with

Most people are covering one or two of these. Naming yours makes every other decision simpler.

  • Income replacement

Replacing what your household would lose if your income stopped.

  • Final expenses

Covering funeral, burial, and end-of-life costs so family does not carry them.

  • Mortgage protection

Helping make sure the people you love can stay in the home.

  • Debt protection

Keeping outstanding debts from becoming someone else's burden.

  • Family financial security

Giving your family room to make decisions without financial pressure.

  • Business protection

Protecting a business, a partner, or a key person.

  • Leaving a financial legacy

Passing something on intentionally, on your terms.

The main categories

Common types of life insurance

A general, educational overview. These describe categories — not any specific policy.

Term life insurance

Coverage for a set period of time — commonly 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. If the policy is in force and the covered event occurs during that term, a benefit is paid. Term policies are typically the most straightforward and are often chosen to cover a specific window, such as the years until a mortgage is paid off or children are grown.

Whole life insurance

A form of permanent coverage designed to remain in force for life as long as the policy requirements are met. Whole life policies generally have level premiums and may accumulate cash value over time according to the terms of the policy.

Final expense insurance

A smaller permanent policy intended to cover funeral, burial, and related costs. Coverage amounts are typically modest, and the application process is often simpler than for larger policies.

Other permanent options

Other permanent structures exist, including universal life and its variations. These policies can offer flexibility in premium and coverage amount, and their terms differ meaningfully from one carrier to another.

These descriptions are general and simplified. They describe categories of insurance, not any specific policy. Actual terms, exclusions, limitations, costs, and conditions are governed entirely by the policy documents issued by the insurance carrier.
