Health insurance when you work for yourself

When you are self-employed, there is no HR department picking a plan for you. That can feel like a lot to figure out, but the options are often better than people expect.

Most self-employed people buy an individual or family plan. Depending on your income, you may qualify for savings that lower your monthly cost.

Irregular income makes estimating tricky. A careful estimate matters, because it affects the savings you receive. It helps to review it during the year if your income changes a lot.

If you have employees, even one or two, a small group plan may also be worth comparing.
